He graduated with a 4.2-grade point average from Alhambra High School in Martinez, California, where he was a student.

Two straight no-hitters were thrown by Stephenson to start his high school baseball team’s senior campaign. In 76+2/3 innings pitched, he concluded the season with an 8–2 win-loss record and a 1.19 ERA.
