Charlie played baseball for the school’s baseball team as an outfielder and left-handed pitcher while attending North Gwinnett High School. He attended Young Harris College after high school, where he played baseball for two years until receiving a baseball scholarship to transfer to Georgia Tech.
In his college years, Charlie played summer baseball with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League. He was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft.
