Pilkington pitched in 14 games for Mississippi State as a freshman in 2016, going 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 42 strikeouts (11 starts).

He pitched for the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod Baseball League following the season, compiling a 2-1 record in 39+13 innings, placing third in the league with a 1.37 ERA, and earning a berth on the CCBL’s 2016 Year-End All-League Team.

As a freshman in 2017, Pilkington started a team-high 17 games, went 8-5, had a 3.08 ERA, and struck out 111 batters in 108 innings.

He was given the opportunity to participate in the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team during the summer, and in five appearances, he threw with a 2.65 ERA against teams from Chinese Taipei, Cuba, and Japan.

In 2018, Pilkington was named to the second team of the Preseason All-Americans by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA, and Perfect Game.

He was also named to the third team by D1 Baseball. For MSU on Friday night, Pilkington started. He made 18 starts in 2018, posting a 3-6 record and a 4.47 ERA.
