Gabriel Alejandro Arias, a shortstop with the Cleveland Guardians of Major League Baseball, was born in Venezuela on February 27, 2000. In 2022, he made his MLB debut.
In July 2016, Arias joined the San Diego Padres as an unrestricted foreign free agent. With the Fort Wayne TinCaps and the Arizona League Padres, he participated in his first professional season in 2017.
He played with the Canberra Cavalry in the Australian Baseball League after the season.
In 2018 Arias played for Fort Wayne, and in 2019 he played for the Lake Elsinore Storm.
He received a spring training invitation from the Padres for 2020.
Arias, Austin Hedges, Josh Naylor, Cal Quantrill, Owen Miller, and Joey Cantillo were traded by the Padres to the Cleveland Indians on August 31, 2020 in exchange for Mike Clevinger, Greg Allen, and Matt Waldron.
On November 20, 2020, the Indians chose Arias’ contract, bringing him onto their 40-man roster. He played with the Triple-A Columbus Clippers during the 2021 campaign.
Arias, who spent the first part of the 2022 season with Columbus, was called up by the Cleveland Guardians as the 29th player for their doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox on April 20, 2022.
In the first game of the doubleheader on April 20, 2022, Arias made his major league debut, starting at second base.
