Cleveland’s Major League Baseball team, known as the Indians since 1915, will now be known as the Guardians.
After months of internal debates sparked by a national reckoning by institutions and teams to permanently drop logos and names considered racist, the baseball team announced the name change Friday with a video on Twitter narrated by actor Tom Hanks. This brought an end to the debates.
At the conclusion of the 2021 season, the new name will take effect. The enormous stone structures, known as “traffic guardians,” that flank both ends of the Hope Memorial Bridge, which connects downtown to Ohio City, served as the model for Cleveland’s new name.
Paul Dolan, the team owner, said he noticed himself taking a close look at the enormous art deco sculptures as the team neared making a final decision on the name.
