The name “Royals” honors the American Royal, a cattle exhibition, horse show, rodeo, and championship barbecue competition held annually in Kansas City since 1899, as well as the similar names of two previous Negro league baseball clubs during the early part of the 20th century.

One a semi-pro team headquartered in Kansas City in the 1910s and 1920s that toured the Midwest, and a California Winter League team based in Los Angeles in the 1940s managed by Chet Brewer and included Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson on its roster.

The Los Angeles team had personnel ties to the Monarchs, but could not utilize the Monarchs’ moniker.

In 2016, Sherman acquired a minority stake in the Cleveland Indians and was appointed vice-chairman.

On August 30, 2019, the owner of the Kansas City Royals, David Glass, declared his plan to sell the team to Sherman for an estimated sum of more than $1 billion. The deal was authorized by MLB and its owners on November 21.
