Sir Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton, a British racer, is currently driving for Mercedes in Formula One. The most victories, pole positions, and podium finishes all go to Hamilton, who also holds a number of other Formula One records. Additionally, he has won seven World Drivers’ Championship titles, which is a record. On January 7, 1985, he was born in Stevenage, England.
Hamilton joined the McLaren Young Driver Program in 1998. Hamilton’s Formula One stint with McLaren from 2007 to 2012 made him the first and only black driver to compete in the Formula One championship. In his first campaign, Hamilton accomplished a lot, finishing second to Kimi Räikkönen by a single point. The next year, he won his maiden championship and became the then-youngest Formula One World Champion in history by passing another driver on the closing lap of the season’s final race. Following six years at McLaren, Hamilton agreed to a contract with Mercedes.
Hamilton has been credited for boosting Formula One’s global popularity by appealing to a larger audience outside of the sport, in part because of his high-profile lifestyle, social and environmental advocacy, and talents in music and design. He has also become a vociferous advocate for activism to combat discrimination and encourage more diversity in the motorsports sector. In the New Year’s Honours of 2021, Hamilton was knighted, and in the year 2020, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential persons in the world.
