According to the sources, the attacker has been identified as Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old citizen of Nara City. The culprit was detained for shooting Shinzo Abe.
Tetsuya Yamagami is thought to be a former member of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.
It is believed that he is now being questioned at the Nara Nishi police station regarding the reason behind striking Shinzo Abe. Reports further indicated that it looks like the suspect has constructed the pistol himself.
He was thought to be standing behind Shinzo Abe, 10 feet away, when he shot at him.
Shinzo Abe fainted on stage in the middle of his speech. Yamagami was brought to the ground by security.
Also, although the police authorities sought to apprehend him, the individual did not attempt to escape away from the crime location.
He is now being questioned at Nara Nishi police station. He informed authorities that he “targeted Abe with the intention of murdering him”, claim reports.
NHK said that Yamagami told detectives he wanted to assassinate the former Prime Minister because he was “dissatisfied” with him. He was also said to have served in the JMSDF for three years in the 2000s, according to reports.
