English teacher, sports pundit, and reporter Richard John Gwynne lived from 23 April 1945 until 9 July 2022.
He moved to Manchester in 1957 after being born in Shropshire in 1945. He went to Chorlton Grammar School, and after graduation, he started teaching. At Moston Brook High School in Manchester, he served as Deputy Housemaster (Fisher) and an English teacher.
His son Andrew represents Denton and Reddish in Greater Manchester as a Labour politician.
He has been a lifetime supporter of Manchester City FC. At the age of 77, he passed away from cancer on July 9, 2022.
In Manchester, Gwynne began his career as a teacher. The toastmaster and after-dinner speaker was Gwynne. In the Manchester region, he also organized regional darts events and MC’d darts exhibitions. He began serving as Lancashire County Cricket Club’s announcer at the beginning of the 2019 campaign.
He spent 31 years writing a monthly column called “The Mancunian Way” for Darts World Magazine, formerly known as Piccadilly Line.
At one point, he also “ghost wrote” Wayne Mardle’s column, Wayne’s World, for the same publication. For about 30 years, he also covered local darts in the newspapers in the North West. In 2011, he abandoned both.
He served as the chairman of the Manchester Superleague and the Manchester Log-End Federation, which he established in 2003 to prevent the extinction of the log-end dartboard.
He provided commentary for the International Socca Federation’s Six-a-Side World Cup competitions.
He released his book, “Soccer Satisfied,” in September 2020 with David Mitchell and Jeff Stelling writing the foreword.
