A jury on Friday, July 22, 2022, found former Trump White House adviser Steve Bannon guilty of two counts of criminal contempt of Congress for defying a House committee subpoena on January 6 after about three hours of deliberation.
Former Trump political advisor Bannon was found guilty by a federal jury on two counts of criminally disobeying a subpoena in connection with the assault on the U.S. Capitol last year.
Bannon faces up to a year in prison for each charge. He is scheduled to receive his punishment on October 21.
The result shouldn’t really surprise anyone. Bannon’s own attorney essentially conceded defeat last week during a hurried hearing where the defense argued the case should be adjourned or even dismissed from court.
By demonizing the press, spreading false information and hostility toward immigrants, inciting an uprising, and breaking the law, Steve Bannon has been undermining American democracy for years.
Up until now, he has always gotten away with it. After being charged with defrauding donors to a private organization that claimed to be raising money for Donald Trump’s border wall, he was granted a presidential pardon.
He was accused of signing up to vote in Florida even though he didn’t reside there, but he avoided prosecution.
Additionally, Bannon’s legal team and he both acted as though they were aware that their arguments were irrelevant. Team Bannon didn’t even present a case, a former prosecutor and frequent “ReidOut” guest Glenn Kirschner observed from inside the courtroom.
