Keenum is the son of Steve Keenum, a former offensive lineman who later served as head football coach and athletic director at McMurry University.
Keenum was born in Brownwood, Texas, and spent most of his youth there before relocating to Abilene, Texas.
Keenum received his high school football education at Wylie High School in Abilene, Texas.
Throughout his time playing high school football for the Bulldogs, he threw for 6,783 yards and 48 touchdowns, while he ran for 41 touchdowns and 2,000 yards.
Keenum was the starting quarterback 42 times during his career and finished with a record of 31–11 overall.
