From 2009 through 2012, Austin played for the West Virginia Mountaineers football team after earning a scholarship from the university. His primary position was changed to wide receiver when he was a freshman in 2009, but he was still only sometimes used as a running back.

Austin was taken by the St. Louis Rams in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft at number eight overall. By selecting Austin before the Buffalo Bills at pick 16, the Rams were able to obtain him.

The Rams also selected former West Virginia wide receiver Stedman Bailey with the 92nd overall choice in the third round of the draft, bringing the former teammates back together in the National Football League.

On June 2, 2022, Austin signed a contract with the Buffalo Bills.
