In 2012, the Green Bay Packers made the risky decision to sign him as an undrafted free agent. Van Roten started playing football when he was 11 years old when he joined the Baldwin Bombers, a youth football team.

Van Roten played tackle for the University of Pennsylvania from 2008 to 2012 and was named Ivy League All-Conference.
