Derek Kerstetter is the son of Devin and Julie Kerstetter. Megan and Drew are his two siblings. Both of Derek Kerstetter’s parents were athletes at West Texas A&M; his mother played basketball there from 1983 to 1985 and his father played football (1986–88).
His brother Drew was a tight end at Colorado School of Mines, where he attended college. Derek Kerstetter’s academic focus is on the intersection between physical culture and athletics.
Derek Kerstetter High School Career:
At San Antonio Reagan High School, David Wetzel served as Kerstetter’s head coach. In addition to being selected to play in the 2017 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, he was named an All-American and received all-district honors on three separate occasions.
Kerstetter was selected for the second team of Academic All-State in 2017, and he also received a spot on the first team of All-District 26-6A and a spot on the second team of District Academic All-Stars in that same year.
Kerstetter was selected to the 6A All-Area Team by the San Antonio Express-News, and he was also selected to the 2016 Super Team by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. The Waco Tribune ranked him as one of the top 100 players in the state of Texas, and 247Sports placed him at No. 410 nationally (No. 27 overall) and No. 52 overall in the state of Texas.
Derek Kerstetter College Career:
Kerstetter made his collegiate debut with a start at right tackle in a game that was played away from home against Iowa State. He started the final ten games of the season at right tackle.
Against Kansas State, he started at right tackle once more and helped the Longhorn’s offense to 40 points, 32 first downs, 546 yards, and he did not allow a sack. During the AT&T Red River Showdown, Kerstetter started at right tackle for the Longhorns, guiding them to earn 23 first downs and 428 total yards of offense versus Oklahoma.
