Originally from Gardner, Massachusetts, Gray went to Leominster High School. After starting out as a wide receiver as a freshman, he progressed to starting quarterback the next campaign. It was the first time in his career that he completed 100 out of 179 throws for 1,707 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Gray returned to wide receiver as a senior and was nominated to the first team of the All-State squad after collecting 30 passes for 619 yards and eight touchdowns in his senior season. After receiving offers from Temple and Appalachian State, Gray decided to play college football at Duke.
Gray has five receptions for 37 yards and two touchdowns in his first season at the university. During his sophomore season, he appeared in all 13 of Duke’s games and had 20 receptions for 234 yards and one score on the ground.
Gray collected 51 receptions for 392 yards and three touchdowns as a junior, earning him a spot on the second team of the Atlantic Coast Conference and a spot on the second team of the National Football Foundation.
In his senior year, Gray was on the shortlist for the Mackey Award and was considered one of the top tight end prospects in the NFL Draft for the 2021 season.
