Harris was born and raised in Hinesville, Georgia. After amassing 1,680 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground during his junior season, he was voted the Georgia Region 2-6A Player of the Year. Harris was named the Region 2-6A Player of the Year for the second consecutive season as a senior after rushing for 1,556 yards and 22 touchdowns.
He rejected offers from other universities in favor of attending the University of South Carolina after high school. At the University of South Carolina, he participated in college football for the Gamecocks of South Carolina. He ran 21 times for 179 yards and four touchdowns as a true freshman at the university.
He was given the starting running back job for the Gamecocks a few weeks into his second campaign. He carried the ball 185 times for 1,138 yards and 15 touchdowns during the regular season. He also caught 21 passes for 159 yards and one score. In the 2022 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots football team selected him.
