Wide receiver with the New England Patriots of the National Football League’s special teams, Matthew Slater plays American football. He is 1.83 meters tall and 93 kilograms. At Servite High School in California, he earned a letter in football for two seasons. Prep Star named him an All-West pick, and Rivals.com gave him a three-star rating.

He was twice chosen for the All-Serra League team. He has 23 catches for 333 yards and two scores as a junior. He has 39 receptions for 707 yards and five touchdowns as a senior. He was named the senior Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year by the Orange County Register in 2003. He played collegiate football for the UCLA Bruins while he was a student at the University of California, Los Angeles.

At the University, he double-majored in political science and history. He participated in 13 games as a junior. He was chosen for the first team of the Pac 10 as a kick returner. The New England Patriots selected him in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He was chosen for the 2011 Pro Football Writers Association (PFW/PFWA) All-Pro teams, which included the All-NFL and All-AFC as a special teamer, as well as the 2012 Pro Bowl.

After the 2011 campaign, he was a free agent, and in 2012, he agreed to a three-year contract to join the Patriots once more. For the second consecutive year, he was selected for the Pro Bowl and the 2012 PFW/PFWA All-Pro at the position of lone AFC special teamer. He agreed to a one-year contract extension in March 2022.
