The National Football League’s New England Patriots use James David Andrews, a center who was born on July 10, 1992. At Georgia, he participated in collegiate football. Dan Reeves, a former player for the Dallas Cowboys, head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, and member of the Denver Broncos, was his uncle.
Andrews didn’t receive a selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, but on May 8 of that year, he signed a free agent contract with the New England Patriots. Due to the losses to starting center Bryan Stork and backup center/guard Ryan Wendell, he played more than anticipated during the preseason and was a standout during Patriot training camp.
As a result of Stork being placed on injured reserve with the option to return and Wendell being inactive, Andrews was added to the 2015 Patriots 53-man roster and started at center against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1. Through Week 10, Andrews started every game and participated on every snap.
Andrews placed in the top two in fan vote for the position even though he was not chosen for the 2016 Pro Bowl. Andrews’ low salary and high snap total led to a performance-based pay incentive of $237,427.11 for him in 2015, which was the second-highest of any Patriot (after cornerback Malcolm Butler).
Bryan Stork was up for the starting center position in 2016, but Andrews ultimately prevailed, forcing Stork to be let go by the organization. For the Patriots’ offensive line, which helped the team to a 14-2 record, he started each of the team’s 16 regular-season games. The longest comeback in Super Bowl history, Super Bowl LI saw Andrews start as the New England Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 34-28 after going down 28-3 late in the third quarter.
Until the 2020 campaign, Andrews extended his contract with the Patriots for three years on May 12, 2017. With a $1.6 million signing bonus and an extra $2.1 million in incentives, the deal’s base value is $9.6 million. Andrews received his first career promotion to captain of the Patriots on September 5, 2017. Including the Patriots’ Super Bowl LII defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles, Andrews started 17 of the team’s 19 games.
At center for the Patriots in 2018, Andrews once more started all 16 games. After the Patriots defeated the Kansas City Chiefs and the Los Angeles Chargers in the playoffs, they advanced to their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance, which they won by a score of 13-3 over the Los Angeles Rams. When the team won, Andrews recovered a fumble.
Andrews was discovered to have a pulmonary embolism on August 26, 2019, endangering his ability to play in the 2019 season. On August 31, 2019, he was put on inactive list that would last the entire season.
Following a complete absence in 2019, Andrews made his start for the Patriots in 2020. He underwent thumb surgery, and on September 26, 2020, he was put on injured reserve. On October 24, he was made available.
The Patriots re-signed Andrews on a four-year contract on March 22, 2021.
