When Hines was younger, he enjoyed playing baseball. He continued to play right up until he was a junior in high school. Despite this, over time he developed an appreciation for football. The final two years of his time at Marshall High School were spent on the football team.
He received four stars as a defensive tackle recruit from the school. After completing his senior year, he made the decision to play for the LSU Tigers, where he was moved from his previous position as a defensive tackle to that of an offensive guard. He was a member of their team for all four years, starting 17 out of the 35 games in which he participated.
