Nate Wieland, a former quarterback who is now a linebacker, is the newest member of the Patriots squad. Following a recent workout, Wieland, 23, was signed by the Patriots. The Patriots had already seen Wieland in person during a tryout at the rookie minicamp, making this their second encounter with him.
Based on the deal, Wieland’s audition clearly impressed the Patriots, at least enough for them to invite him to training camp. Just after the first session in May, Wieland tweeted, and then he arrived wearing the No. 59 jersey.
Wieland’s jersey number and compliments were tweeted by Iowa-based training program Premier Athlete.
For a while, Wieland, an Iowa City native, was a quarterback at the University of Iowa. His junior year was cut short by injuries, but as a senior, he still managed to be an all-state performer. He was a three-sport athlete in high school, playing QB, DB, and LB, but as the starting quarterback, his team went 8-3 and advanced to the state playoffs.
In addition to throwing for 1,671 yards and nine touchdowns, Wieland ran for 741 yards and 11 scores. Even as a senior, he punted the ball 29 times for an average of 41.1 yards. In addition to his accomplishments on the football field, Wieland earned letters in basketball and track and field.
