As reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Cleveland Browns and the New England Patriots have agreed to a deal that would see linebacker Mack Wilson go to the Patriots and edge rusher Chase Winovich go to the Browns.
The deal gets the Browns a player who might potentially help them strengthen their pass rush while saving them around $1.5 million on the salary cap.
Wilson’s salary for this season was set at $2.61 million. His base wage, which the Patriots will now collect, was $2.54 million.
At 24, Wilson still has plenty of time to develop into a star player for a team like the Patriots. Wilson’s former coach at Alabama, Nick Saban, has a close relationship with Bill Belichick and very definitely called Wilson about him.
Wilson’s role was diminished last season, but he performed better when he did play, primarily serving as a run stopper.
Wilson was going to find it more and more difficult to get defensive playing time with guys like Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Jacob Phillips, and others, though he did contribute more to special teams this past year than any previous.
