Few would have guessed that cornerback Malcolm Butler Butler would agree to sign a two-year deal with the New England Patriots worth up to $9 million in the offseason.
Butler’s second tour of duty in New England appears to be over about six months later.
On Thursday, the Patriots released Butler after reaching an injury settlement. He had reportedly suffered a hip injury and had been put on injured reserve on August 16 as NFL teams trimmed their active rosters from 90 to 85 players.
Butler played with the Patriots from 2014 to 2017 and is famed for his Super Bowl XLIX game-ending interception. He was viewed as the team’s best player at the position for a significant portion of that time. Butler recorded 205 total tackles, 47 passes defended, four forced fumbles (of which he recovered two), and eight interceptions during his four seasons with the Patriots.
He won two Super Bowls while playing in New England (XLIX, LI), was named to the second team All-Pro in 2016, and was chosen for the Pro Bowl in 2015, all of which helped him earn a spot on the 2010 New England Patriots All-Decade Team.
He was benched in Super Bowl LII, which marked the bitter end of his time in New England at the conclusion of the 2017 campaign. It would be the last game that Butler would play with the squad.
