Jones, a three-star recruit out of high school, started his college career at Troy and had a significant effect right away despite only playing defense in 10 of his 24 games from the start.
In addition to his four combined interceptions, one of which was returned for a score, Jones made a name for himself as a dynamic return man by scoring four kickoff returns in 2017 and 2018. Furthermore, he even caught five passes that were attempted.
Due to transfer restrictions set by the NCAA, Jones had to forgo his junior season before moving on to Houston in 2019.
He was a starter in the Cougars’ secondary and their go-to kickoff and punt returner after he was permitted to play the following season.
He started 17 of the 20 games he played in during the following two seasons, had six interceptions, a forced fumble, five additional return touchdowns (three punts, two kickoffs), and caught 10 passes for 109 yards and another score. Additionally, he twice earned first-team AAC honors.
Soon after joining the Patriots through the draft, Jones agreed to a typical four-year rookie deal. He will be listed on the team’s books with a salary cap figure of $941,264 this season as part of the $5.18 million agreement.
Currently, though, the NFL’s Top-51 rule only counts the proration of his fully guaranteed $236,264 signing bonus. Meanwhile, the $705,000 non-guaranteed pay will only be added to the equation if he plays for the team throughout the regular season.
