One of the New England Patriots’ key defenders has been committed for the foreseeable future. Adrian Phillips extended his deal with the team for an additional three years, keeping him under contract there through the 2024 campaign.
In 2022, Phillips will be paid a guaranteed $1.12 million. In 2023 and 2024, he will be paid $1.65 million to play. This means that even if he is hurt before 2023, he will still receive the full 2023 wage.
The $4.75 million signing bonus that the Patriots awarded Phillips is fully guaranteed and will be distributed over the course of the contract, up to the year 2021.
According to Miguel Benzan, as a result, the team’s current cap figure will drop by $1.19 million (i.e., one-fourth of the total bonus) to $987,002.
In 2022, Phillips will receive a roster bonus of $850,000, with an extra $50,000 for each game in which he plays.
The entire sum will be seen as likely to be paid and so counted against New England’s salary cap the next year because he has played in each of the first 16 games and is a sure thing to do so against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
In 2023 and 2024, Phillips is eligible to receive roster bonuses of up to $1.28 million, or $75,000 per game.
