We have spent the past few weeks analyzing the Jets’ draft choices. Here we continue our in-depth look at each of the undrafted rookies with Irvin Charles, a wide receiver out of Penn State.
Charles, who is now 25, stands at 6’4″ and weighs 219 pounds. He played last season in Division II at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he caught 39 receptions for 792 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Although he had attended Penn State previously, he was dismissed from the squad in 2017 and didn’t play again until last season.
From the New Jersey area, Charles earned four stars as a high school recruit and was recruited by Penn State as early as 2015. Charles, who sat out his first year as a redshirt, broke out with a game-winning 80-yard touchdown catch in 2016. Only two other passes were caught by him.
Although he did not record any catches in 2017, his contributions on special teams were crucial. He was cut at the conclusion of the year and missed the entire 2018 campaign as a result.
Due to academic ineligibility, he missed his first year at IUP after being recruited in 2019, and then the 2020 season was canceled because of the Covivirus D19 outbreak. In his return season last year, he showed promise with 39 receptions for 792 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Charles was not selected to participate in the scouting combine, but he did go to the College Gridiron Showcase and exercise at Villanova’s pro day. After the draft, the Jets signed him as an undrafted free agent.
