George Fant plays offensive lineman for the New York Jets of the National Football League in American football (NFL). He attended Western Kentucky University, where he played football and basketball.
In 2016, the Seattle Seahawks signed him as an undrafted free agent. Fant began to be utilized by Seattle as a hybrid tight end on tackle-eligible plays in 2018.
Fant tore his ACL in the second game of the 2017 preseason, ending his season. On September 2, 2017, he went on injured reserve.
After rookie tight end Will Dissly suffered an injury during a game against the Arizona Cardinals in week four, Fant began to function as a hybrid offensive tackle/tight end. He would declare himself a qualified receiver while lining up as the sixth offensive lineman, either inside the line or outside. Fant excelled in this new position and helped the 2018 Seahawks rank as the league’s best running offense.
Fant’s first career reception came on December 10, 2018, during a Monday Night Football game against the Minnesota Vikings in week 13, when he caught a 9-yard pass from quarterback Russell Wilson.
In 2019, Fant continued to serve the Seahawks as a hybrid lineman. He served as the main backup offensive tackle during some of the season, taking the place of an injured Duane Brown.
Fant attracted attention on December 2, 2019, during a Monday Night Football game against the Minnesota Vikings, as he assisted the Seahawks in rushing for a season-high 218 yards in a 37-30 victory. Throughout the course of the game, he lined up in a variety of positions along the line and reported as an eligible receiver on 42 plays.
Fant and the New York Jets agreed to a three-year, $30 million contract on April 23, 2020.
