Jamien Sherwood, a linebacker for the New York Jets, is the first selection from the NFL Draft proceedings last weekend to sign a rookie contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The four-year contract is reportedly for over $3.8 million, according to Schefter, who references Sherwood’s agent Drew Rosenhaus. According to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, the contract includes a $350,000 signing bonus.
The Auburn alumnus Sherwood was selected 146th overall in the fifth round on Saturday. With 44 solo stops last season, he was ninth in the SEC, and in his three years as a Tiger, he made 140 stops total.
The Jensen Beach, Florida native was first classified as a defensive back on the Jets’ official roster, but he now appears as a linebacker.
The Jets’ defense had a busy day as they spent each of their final five selections on defenders, primarily secondary players, including the selection of Sherwood (Michael Carter III, Jason Pinnock, Brandin Echols, Hamsah Nasirildeen).
Sherwood’s ability to push receivers into the middle of the field when playing for Auburn and his reputation as a powerful tackler has led some to assume that he can also assist in special teams coverage.
The Jets look to be doing the same with Nasirildeen, who was originally listed as a safety. His physique (6’2, 216 lbs.) led some to anticipate that his ultimate new team would shift him to linebacker.
