Ashtyn Davis, a former Cal safety, needed a few more days to finalize a deal than almost every other player selected in the 2020 NFL draft, but he did it. Davis was signed by the New York Jets, who made the announcement Thursday night.
Davis reportedly agreed to a $4.9 million, four-year contract, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Davis was projected to receive that sum as the fourth pick in the third round (68th overall).
He will make around $900,000 in his first year (including the signing bonus), $1.12 million in his second, $1.33 million in his third, and $1.56 million in his fourth, with a club option for a fifth season, per Spotrac.
Why Davis took a few extra days to agree than other rookies selected in the draft is unknown. Maybe there was some contract language that needed to be negotiated.
Davis, a walk-on for the Cal football team, is anticipated to see a lot of action in his first season. He will most likely serve as the Jets’ starting safety pair’s backup, along with maybe serving as a nickel back on occasion.
