He attended Central Michigan and Virginia for his college football playing careers. Poljan spent his childhood in Lansing, Michigan, and graduated from Lansing Catholic High School, where he earned a letter in track and field in addition to his athletic accomplishments in basketball and football.
As a sophomore, he took over as the starting quarterback for the Cougars. As a junior, he passed for 2,802 yards and 34 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,017 yards and 22 touchdowns.
As a senior, Poljan passed for 1,907 yards and 16 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,237 yards and 25 touchdowns. He was named first-team Division 5–6 all-state and the Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year.
Poljan had previously promised that he would play college football for Minnesota, but he backed out of that commitment after head coach Jerry Kill announced his retirement.
The coaches at Nebraska, Iowa State, and Michigan State all wanted him to play another position, but he ultimately decided to play basketball at Central Michigan, where his father had previously played.
