Tyler is a citizen of the United States yet has German ancestry. He played football while a student at Solon High School on the offensive and defensive lines. He was chosen to participate in the 2018 U.S. Army All-American Game just before receiving his high school diploma. He had finished high school, had played football, and decided to go to the University of Iowa.
He began attending the University of Iowa in 2018 and played football there for the Iowa Hawkeyes from that year through 2021. He played defensive tackle in his first year of college at Iowa. Before the 2019 football season, he switched positions and became the center. In the 13 games he participated in this season, he started each one.
He started games again the next season, in 2020, and was also named an All-American and a finalist for the Rimington Trophy. He attracted notice once more in 2021 when he was named the Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year, the Rimington Trophy winner, and the unanimous All-American. The Baltimore Ravens selected him in the opening round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
