Late in his junior season, Phillips got back on the football field after being encouraged to do so by a number of players and coaches.
In spite of the fact that he was extended scholarship opportunities from FCS schools, he decided to attend East Mississippi Community College with the intention of transferring to a Division I school after he had completed his education there.
Phillips played with the East Mississippi Community College Lions for two seasons. Between his two seasons at EMCC, he committed to Mississippi State and enrolled at Mississippi State in January 2017.
Phillips spent his first season at Mississippi State as a redshirt, a decision he later deemed “the best thing I could have done.”
During his junior year, he rotated between both tackle positions as part of an offensive line rotation.
Phillips started all 13 games the Bulldogs played during his senior year. Phillips participated in the Senior Bowl in 2020 after the season.
