Phillips played football his freshman year at Grenada High School in Grenada, Mississippi, before concentrating on basketball and marching band. Late in his junior year, Phillips returned to the field of play at the urging of several people.
Despite receiving scholarship offers from certain FCS institutions, he decided to attend East Mississippi Community College in order to better his chances of becoming a Division I recruit.

The decision Phillips made to redshirt his freshman year at Mississippi State was one he later referred to as “the smartest thing I ever could have done.”
During his junior year, he then participated in an offensive line rotation while playing both tackle positions.
Phillips started each of the Bulldogs’ 13 games during his senior year. Phillips participated in the 2020 Senior Bowl following the season.
