At South High School, he concluded his career with a state-record 57 sacks. After graduating from high school, he played for the Miami Hurricanes while attending the University of Miami. In his final year with the Hurricanes in 2007, he finished with 50 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, three passes defended, and three interceptions.

The Arizona Cardinals selected Campbell in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He was chosen as the sixth defensive end in 2008. In July 2008, he agreed to a four-year, $3.40 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals, with a guaranteed $1.68 million and a $484,500 signing bonus.

In March 2017, he agreed to a four-year, $60 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which included with guaranteed payments of $30 million and a signing bonus of $6 million. In March 2020, the Jaguars traded Campbell to the Baltimore Ravens. In April 2022, he re-signed with the Ravens for a two-year, $12.5 million deal.
