The Ravens wasted no time in locking up one of their promising young outside linebackers, Tyus Bowser, with a four-year contract extension.
According to Adam Caplan of Sirius XM, the deal is worth $22 million with an increase to $27 million.
The reported departures of Matthew Judon (New England Patriots), Yannick Ngakoue (Las Vegas Raiders), and Jihad Ward (Jacksonville Jaguars) emphasized the need to retain Bowser.
The only experienced outside linebackers under contract for the Ravens are Bowser, Pernell McPhee, and Jaylon Ferguson, so they are likely not finished at the position, but keeping Bowser does tick a large box.
Bowser, a second-round selection in 2017, has developed into one of Baltimore’s top coverage linebackers. He set a career-high with 34 tackles and added three interceptions and five pass breakups last season. Even though Judon was valuable, the Ravens needed to keep Bowser because they frequently dropped him into coverage.
Bowser’s pass rushing skills were on display as well, as evidenced by his five sacks this year. Despite only recording two sacks all of last season, he set a new personal best with 14 hits on the quarterback.
Bowser, who is still young at 27 years old, will have the opportunity to keep improving his game as a potential starter in Baltimore.
