There is no denying that Felix Auger-Aliassime is a star on the tennis court, with the Canadian continuing to his stock and profile increase with each ATP Tour event that he participates in.
Indeed, it is also impossible to deny that the 2022 campaign has been one that has had plenty of ups and downs throughout the season, with the 22-year-old Montreal native has struggled for consistency at times within his game.
In this article, we will look at what he has achieved thus far while on the ATP Tour, and then look to try and predict what we could see from him for the remainder of the 2022 season schedule. So, without further ado, let’s get straight into it!
Felix Auger-Aliassime has had an up and down 2022 campaign
Anyone who has been following Felix Auger-Aliassime’s career this season will have known just how many ups and downs the Canadian tennis player has gone through this season, however, there is no denying that the youngster is still one of the brightest stars within tennis and potentially one of the next biggest names to emerge in the future of the sport once the era of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Rodger Federer comes to an end.
Indeed, the season actually started the best way possible for Auger-Aliassime, as he managed to start off with a win as part of the Canadian team in the ATP Cup. He was competing alongside Denis Shapovalov in which they managed to defeat Spanish duo Roberto Bautista Agut, and Pablo Carreno Busta, to claim victory. In doing so, Auger-Aliassime managed to climb to a new high in the ATP rankings, as he was ranked World No. 9.
The Canadian did also manage to secure a victory at the Rotterdam Open, which is a 500 series event back in February. He managed to defeat Greek ace Stefanos Tsitsipas 6–4, 6–2 in the final, thus giving the North American his first taste of ATP title success after eight previous failures.
However, things have not been as successful as he would have liked in regard to victories on the court, although he has put in a number of wonderful performances that he can look back on with fond memories and encouragement.
For instance, he was able to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open before being beaten by Daniil Medvedev in five sets, while he was beaten by Rafael Nadal in the 2022 French Open in the fourth round after becoming just the third player to take the Spaniard to five sets in this tournament; following Djokovic and American John Isner.
Many are starting to take note of Auger-Aliassime
Naturally, given the performances that he has been able to produce on the court, there will be many that will have taken note of Auger-Aliassime in recent months and may be identifying him as a potential star of the future.
Indeed, while he did not have the best of Grand Slams at Wimbledon recently, where he was knocked out in the first round by Maxime Cressy in four sets, there has certainly been some encouragement for those who like to wager on the tennis action when he is involved.
Punters who are now able to use and access the Canadian betting apps for an easier experience have identified their native player as a possible bet each time he appears on the court due to the talent that he continues to display despite still only being 22 years of age.
As a result, there may be some in his homeland that will be considering whether to back Auger-Aliassime during the 2022 US Open, especially as the tournament is held on the hard court. But, how well will he do?
What are Auger-Aliassime’s chances of a successful US Open?
Of course, there are still a few tennis events between now and the start of the US Open, but Auger-Aliassime has been putting in some solid performances ahead of the final Grand Slam of the season.
The Canadian has managed to reach the latter rounds of a number of ATP Tour events in recent weeks and months, and this should provide him with some confidence. Indeed, some may also argue that while he is an all-court tennis player who prefers clay, some of his best tournaments have been on the hard surface; the surface on which he won his maiden ATP Tour series title in Rotterdam earlier this year.
So, what will he be able to achieve at the US Open? Naturally, it can all depend on the draw that is handed to the 22-year-old, as this is yet to be determined. He may get fortunate and have a schedule that is favorable, whereas he could be given the complete opposite, too. However, let’s not forget that he did have an exceptional Grand Slam last year.
Indeed, Auger-Aliassime managed to reach the semifinals of last year’s competition before he was beaten by Daniil Medvedev in three sets (4-6, 5-7, 2-6). He managed to reach the last four by defeating the likes of Roberto Bautista Agut, Frances Tiafoe, and Carlos Alcaraz Garfia, thus capping off an excellent competition.
It was an improvement on the year before when he reached the quarterfinals, so the natural progression would be to make an appearance in the final. Whether he is able to achieve this is something that only time will answer.
Final Thoughts
It is clear to see that Felix Auger-Aliassime has a really bright future ahead of him within the world of tennis, and it is incredible to see what he has already been able to achieve at 22; even if he may have wanted to achieve more than he has at this stage.
Of course, the Grand Slams are where his name is going to be propelled into the spotlight and noticed by casual fans, however those Canadians who are tennis enthusiasts will have undoubtedly been left feeling proud about what he has been able to achieve and will be unable to wait to see what he achieves with each ATP Tour event and Grand Slam he competes in.
