Justin Pugh, a guard with the Arizona Cardinals, signed a contract with the team in 2018 that was worth $45 million over the course of five years.
However, because of a roster bonus of $1 million that was due in 2022 and a salary that was projected to be more than $8 million in 2022, he was a leading contender to be released in order to save nearly $10 million in cap space.
According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports, he will be returning to the team in 2022 on a one-year agreement with a base salary of $5.5 million and potential incentives worth up to $1.5 million.
As a result of the fact that $2 million of his initial signing bonus is still being counted against this year’s salary limit, his new cap hit has been decreased from around $12 million to $7.5 million, resulting in a savings of approximately $4.5 million.
The Cardinals have ensured continuity at left guard for the upcoming season with this change.
Considering that the two tackle spots and the center position appeared to be fixed for 2022, the only guard position that appears to be up for grabs in the coming season is the right guard position.
