As a senior in high school, he participated in football at Carlsbad High School. After graduating from high school, he attended San Diego State University and played three seasons of NCAA football for the San Diego State Aztecs.

Although he redshirted his true freshman year, he was selected to The Athletic’s first team Mountain West Conference and second team freshman All-American lists. A total of 49 tackles, nine tackles for a loss, and 5.5 sacks were recorded towards the end of the season by him.

His four sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss during the 2020 football season earned him the title of league Defensive Player of the Year. The Walter Camp Foundation, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News, and Associated Press all named him to their second-team All-American lists as well. By the time he completed his college studies, he had been selected to the first team of the Mountain West Conference three times.

He also took part in 36 games, starting 34 of them, and finished with 155 tackles, 21.0 sacks, 39.0 tackles for loss, three passes deflected, and a forced fumble. With the 87th overall pick in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals selected San Diego State’s Thomas.
