In 2016, Franks spent his first year at Florida in a non-playing capacity as a redshirt. After a competition with 2016 starter Luke Del Rio and incoming Notre Dame transfer Malik Zaire, the Gators decided to start him in the season opener against Michigan as a redshirt freshman in 2017.
