He attended Charter Oak High School, where he played high school football. He made 110 tackles, 5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and was selected All-CIF Southeast Southern Section while playing linebacker as a junior.
He had 132 tackles as a senior and was recognized as the defensive player of the year and All-CIF Southeast Southern Section in 2009. He accepted a football scholarship from the school and played inside linebacker for the San Jose State Spartans from 2010 to 2013.

With a B.A. in communication studies, he received his degree from San Jose State in December 2013. Immediately following the May 2014 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys signed Smith as an undrafted free agent.
