Malik Hooker’s athletic career started in high school. He attended New Castle High School in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and participated in basketball and football. As a multi-rotational player, he played as a cornerback and wide receiver.

A senior in high school, he was named Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Male Athlete of the Year.

Malik Hooker attended Ohio State University and played for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 2014 to 2016.

Hooker participated in all 13 games in 2015 after redshirting his first season at Ohio State in 2014, earning 10 tackles while primarily playing on special teams. He took over at free safety in 2016 as a redshirt sophomore.

He made his first two career interceptions in the opening game. On November 29, 2016, it was announced that Hooker had been selected for the first team All-Big Ten.

Following the conclusion of the campaign, Hooker made the decision to bypass his final two years of college eligibility and instead enter the 2017 NFL Draft.
