Tarell Basham is a defensive end who plays for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. He stands 1.93 m tall and weighs 118 kg. In his time playing football at Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount, Virginia, he had 82 tackles and 16 sacks. Before deciding to enroll at Ohio University, he spent a year at the military post-graduate school Hargrave Military Academy after completing high school.
He took part in NCAA football from 2013 through 2016 with the Ohio Bobcats. He set a school record for sacks as a senior in 2016 and was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year with 50 tackles, 16 for losses, two breakups, two forced fumbles, and a recovery.
In his four years of college, he made 158 tackles, 41.5 of which were for a loss, 29.5 sacks, a school record, six pass breakups, 5 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery. He took part in 51 games at Ohio University, starting 37 of them, and helped the Bobcats win three bowl games and the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship. In the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Basham was chosen by the Indianapolis Colts.
In October 2018, he was reclaimed by the New York Jets from the waiver wire. In week 16 of the 2019 season, he recorded a pickoff following a pass. The interception marked his first in the NFL. In March 2021, Basham and the Dallas Cowboys came to a deal for a two-year contract.
