Gano has also suited up for the Washington Redskins, the Carolina Panthers, and the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League. In 2018, he set a new team record for the longest field goal while playing for the Panthers with a kick of 63 yards.

When Gano was born, his father, Mark, a Master Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy and a Vietnam War veteran, was stationed at the Canadian Forces Base in Gander, Newfoundland.

A lengthy line of Gano’s forebears, including his great-grandfather Richard Gano and grandfather Raymond of Martinsburg, West Virginia, served in the military.

Gano attended J. M. Tate High School, Home of the Mighty Mighty Aggies, and was a two-sport star in football and track there. He grew up in Cantonment, Florida, which is close to Pensacola, Florida.

He was named to USA Today’s All-American First Team for high school football, and Rivals.com ranked him as the third-best kicker in the country.

In the CaliFlorida All-Star game, Gano participated and made a 50-yard field goal. In his senior year, Gano made three field goals of over 55 yards (of 57, 64, and 65 yards) and had one attempt of 71 yards blocked by a foul.

In total, 36 of his 38 kickoffs resulted in touchbacks, and as a senior, he averaged more than 42 yards per punt.

In the sprinting events, Gano excelled as a prominent track and field athlete for the state. At the 2005 FHSAA 3A District 1, he won the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and 400-meter dash, each in a time of 10.55, 21.70, and 48.00 seconds, respectively. He also won the 400-meter dash.

After the 2009 NFL Draft, Gano signed a non-drafted free agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens. On September 5, the Ravens released Gano after selecting Steve Hauschka as their kicker.

Gano went from wearing #5 to #9 on May 10, 2022, and Kayvon Thibodeaux gave $50,000 to a charity in exchange for the #5 jersey.

Gano was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his four field goals in the Week 2 victory over the Carolina Panthers (19-16).
