After Minor High School, he graduated and enrolled to Samford. He played football for the Bulldogs of Samford. He received a redshirt as a freshman in 2008 and then had two years of backup duties in 2009 and 2010.
Over the course of all eleven games in 2011, he made 23 tackles and three tackles for loss, earning a starting position. He surpassed himself in 2012, playing in all 11 games and recording 31 tackles, eight for a loss, six sacks, and a blocked punt.
