He played football and went to Valley Christian High School. In April 2014, he made a commitment to the University of Texas in Austin. He participated in collegiate football at Texas for the Texas Longhorns.
As a freshman, he participated in every game. As a sophomore, he started nine games and finished the campaign with 54 catches. Coach Tom Herman praised Johnson’s significant offseason improvement before his senior season. He was added to the preseason watch lists for the Walter Camp Award, Wuerffel Award, and Biletnikoff Award.
Johnson won the fourth-week National Player of the Week award for his trickery and 124 yards against TCU. Due to a slight knee injury, he was forced to leave the Texas Tech game on November 10. He established a record with 177 receiving yards in the 2018 Big 12 Championship Game.
In the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Johnson with the 165th overall pick. In January 2021, he received the designation of Injured Reserve. His contract was terminated by the Jaguars on August 2021. In September 2021, the New York Giants picked up Johnson off of waivers. He went on injured reserve in August 2022 as a result of a ruptured achilles tendon.
