He played collegiate football for the Cincinnati Bearcats of the University of Cincinnati. He redshirted his true rookie year in 2013, instead. As a senior, he was selected to the second team of the American Athletic Conference.

Throughout his time at Cincinnati, he participated in 33 games and started 24 of them at left tackle. Arizona Cardinals selected Cunningham with the 254th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
