Zyon Gilbert of Florida Atlantic became a man among boys over the course of his five seasons with the school. After it was all said and done, he had played 3,180 snaps and had an 82.9 coverage rating.
Over the course of five seasons, Gilbert participated in a total of 60 games, playing the slot corner position, outside corner (which was his primary role), free safety, and strong safety. He finished with 247 tackles (158 solos), five interceptions, and 26 pass breakups on the stat sheet.
In 2021, he ranked fifth in the conference in passes defense, and in the two previous years, he was named to the All-Conference USA Honorable Mention team.
During FAU’s pro day, Gilbert put on a show of his athleticism, and several of his numbers stacked up nicely against what would have been his competition at the combine had he been invited.
He completed the 40-yard dash in 4.40 seconds, which would have tied him for 11th place among cornerbacks. He also had a vertical jump of 40 inches, which would have placed him in second place. Finally, his broad jump of 11 feet, 6 inches would have placed him in first place among cornerbacks.
Gilbert is one of over a dozen promising young cornerbacks who are competing for a position in the Giants’ defensive backfield.
