He played high school football while he was a student at South Caldwell High School and Hickory High School. He participated in the Under Armour All-America Game as a high school senior and was chosen for the first team All-State.

Despite entering college as a four-star player, he selected Florida State over other offers from universities. While there, he was a member of Florida State’s football squad, the Seminoles.
