He participated in all 14 games as a true freshman and made three starts.

He ran for 744 yards and five touchdowns on 121 carries to conclude the season. He played alongside Kennedy Brooks as a sophomore in 2018, rushing for 947 yards on 164 carries and 13 touchdowns. He participated in nine games as a junior in 2019 and had 54 carries for 385 yards and four touchdowns.

He ran for 331 yards against Northwestern University in the 2020 Big Ten Championship Game as a graduate transfer to Ohio State University. Both for a Football Bowl Subdivision championship game and for an Ohio State player in a single game, his rushing yards set records.

By amassing 193 yards on the ground, scoring a rushing touchdown, and catching 4 catches for 61 yards, he contributed to his team’s 49-28 Sugar Bowl victory. In the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Sermon. On August 31, 2022, the 49ers cut him loose. He was taken off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles on September 1, 2022.
