Taylor Heinicke, a quarterback for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League, was born on March 15, 1993.
He participated in Old Dominion’s collegiate football program before signing a free-agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings in 2015.
Heinicke has also played for the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL, the New England Patriots, the Houston Texans, and the Carolina Panthers.
With Washington in 2020, he replaced an injured Alex Smith in a Wild Card playoff game, and after Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered an injury, he started much of the 2021 season.
Heinicke was not drafted in the 2015 NFL Draft, but he signed a free-agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
In the competition to back up Teddy Bridgewater, the starting quarterback for the Vikings, he faced off against Shaun Hill and Mike Kafka. As a result of Kafka’s injury and subsequent placement on injured reserve, Heinicke was promoted to the position of backup quarterback.
Heinicke joined the Washington Football Team’s practice squad on December 8, 2020. He was finishing up his engineering degree at Old Dominion when he joined them. On December 19, he was added to their active roster.
