American football quarterback Taylor Heinicke plays for the National Football League’s Washington Commanders. He participated in Old Dominion’s collegiate football program before signing a free-agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings in 2015.
Heinicke has also played for the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL, the New England Patriots, the Houston Texans, and the Carolina Panthers.
With Washington in 2020, he replaced an injured Alex Smith in a Wild Card playoff game, and after Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered an injury, he started much of the 2021 season.
Heinicke signed a free-agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings after not being selected in the 2015 NFL Draft. He competed against Mike Kafka and Shaun Hill for the position of backup quarterback to Teddy Bridgewater, the Vikings’ starting quarterback.
Heinicke was promoted to the position of a backup quarterback as a result of Kafka’s injury and subsequent placing on injured reserve.
